“I am fed up doctor” acclaimed Mr. Suresh a Marketing executive, pouring out his pain. A man, who had to travel almost daily, was under total turmoil as his bowels were not under his control. Any food intake would make his bowel grumble and he had to search for latrines, which reduced his self confidence, his working capacity, and ultimately his productivity in company. Going through his complaints I could easily understand the reason for is agony, something in medical field we call – IBS.

What is IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by the presence of a cluster of symptoms and signs that include cramping, abdominal pain, increased gas, altered bowel habits, food intolerance, and bloating (distention). IBS refers to a problem with the movement (motility) rather than any damage to the tissues of the digestive system.

Causes (IBS)?

The main cause is abnormal movements of the colon and small intestines (too fast or slow, or too strong). Food sensitivities, possibly caused by poor absorption of sugars or acids in food adds on as another factor.Gastroenteritis, a viral or bacterial infection of the stomach and intestines, may also trigger IBS symptoms. Psychological conditions such as anxiety or depression are observed in many people with IBS. Reproductive hormones or neurotransmitters may be off-balance in people with IBS.

Symptoms and signs?

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized mostly by abdominal pain and cramping. Other IBS symptoms and signs include

Commonly diarrhea alternating with constipation is observed. Increased gas, abdominal swelling or bloating, cramping pain after eating certain foods, nausea, mucous or foamy stool are other associated symptoms. These symptoms are often relieved by bowel movements; Women with IBS may have more symptoms during their menstrual periods.

How is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) diagnosed?

A complete history and physical is taken to determine the duration and frequency of symptoms. To be diagnosed with IBS, the duration of symptoms should be at least six months, and should occur at least three times a month. A doctor may order tests, including blood tests, stool tests, X-rays, or CT scans.

•     It is better to avoid Dairy products; including milk and cheese (Lactose intolerance symptoms can be similar to IBS symptoms). Certain vegetables that increase gas (such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts), and legumes (such as beans). Fatty or fried foods, Alcohol, caffeine, or soda, foods high in sugars.

Self tips :-

•    Keep a food dairy to track which food creates more problems and avoids these problem foods.
•    Take small and frequent meals.
•    Exercise regularly, walk, engage in yoga and meditation relaxation techniques.
•    Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep daily.

Healing with homeopathy

Researchers believe that there may possibly be a tendency, which predisposes an individual to IBS. Homeopathy addresses this likely disposition, it treats the individual, not just one’s intestinal and bowel symptoms. This holistic approach enables homeopathy to bring about a tangible change in the individuals response to their distressing symptoms.

Case :- Harsh (30) suffered from chronic diarrhoea. He was in field work and this diarrhoea is to trouble him badly. It was diagnosed to be IBS 5 years back but without much changes in his symptoms. He suffered from frequent stools, passing gas and reduced appetite. Sense of insecurity in the rectum even when passing flatus, whether stool or gas will come. Anus open, stool runs away without patient knowing. All symptoms are worse in the early morning.  Compiling all the symptoms a remedy selected, beginning with low potency and later raised. The symptoms started reducing and left the patient without any complaints in a span of 8-9 months.
